The day after Christmas news outlets from Jerusalem to Tampa Bay quoted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as saying that Israel does not “turn the other cheek.”
It took two days for it to register that he was using the words of Jesus from the books of Matthew and Luke. It is a phrase often used in public discourse. These days its a cliche, tossed about carelessly without much thought. He probably didn’t think twice about using it.
But I’m thinking of it. I find his use of these words, especially used in the negative in stating what Israel will not do, to be beyond irony–haunting, revealing, spiritually charged.
